Matakana Estate wanted to produce a Syrah that held its own, right up there amongst the very best, and this wine does just that. This wine is available in very limited quantities and is made from our own premium Syrah grapes, grown in the renowned Gimblett Road area situated in the Hawkes Bay area of New Zealand.
Our winemaker has created a wine which embodies the elegance of the Rhone-styles Syrahs, yet captures the distinctive personality of the Hawkes Bay terroir.
The process begins with extensive care of the grapes selected for this wine. Nurtured, then picked with care, the grape juice is allowed to rest with its skins to extract the maximum flavour and colour from the fruit. The wine is then matured in predominantly new French oak barriques for an extended period of 12 months, adding distinctive yet integrated oak character.
This audacious wine, with its bright brick red colour, leads with heady aromas of aniseed, blueberry and smokiness. Intense fruit flavours of blueberries, red currants and raspberries are layered with complex savoury and spicy characters and fine round tannins. A long, soft finish with a fracious fruit lift completes the experience. This is a wine to be savoured and enjoyed.
